In the heart of Miami, a city known for its vibrant and diverse culture, the Cuban community faces a unique challenge.

As Miami’s population grows and diversifies, and the original wave of Cuban exiles passes away, the distinct Cuban identity that has long been a cornerstone of the city’s character risks being overshadowed. This is where CasaCuba at Florida International University comes into play.

CasaCuba is not just a building; it’s a sanctuary for Cuban heritage, envisioned to be a lively and ever-evolving cultural hub. CasaCuba will be a place where Cuban culture is celebrated through educational programs, cultural events, and spaces for scholarly discussions. It’s a place where the stories of Cuban Americans will be shared, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation among newer generations and other cultural groups in Miami. It’s a place to inspire future immigrant groups who haven’t even arrived at our shores yet.

Anchored by the country’s fourth-largest university, education plays a crucial role at CasaCuba. By attracting students, academics, and thought leaders, it aims to discuss and preserve Cuba’s rich history and the significant contributions of its diaspora. This effort ensures that Cuban heritage remains alive and relevant, even as the city around it evolves.

Leadership is key to CasaCuba’s mission. Figures like George Corton of the Hejl Foundation and Vice-Chairman of the board for CasaCuba exemplify the community’s dedication to maintaining and celebrating its heritage. “As one of the founders of CasaCuba, George’s vision for the project has always been bold and ambitious,” remarks Lili Betancourt Space, Executive Director of CasaCuba.

Lili Betancourt Space, Executive Director of CasaCuba:
“ As one of the founders of CasaCuba, George’s vision for the project has always been bold and ambitious...His leadership has played a pivotal role in advancing plans to bring this vision to life. His commitment to the project underscores the importance of having strong advocates who understand the cultural significance of such initiatives. ”

The project’s success depends on the community’s support, and this is why the Hejl Foundation is actively working with the leadership of CasaCuba to realize the dream. By engaging with CasaCuba, the community can ensure that the vibrant Cuban culture continues to thrive in Miami, providing a cultural anchor for future generations. As many of us involved in the project say, it’s hard to imagine a Miami without the Arsht, the Frost, the PAM, and soon it will be hard to imagine this city without a CasaCuba.

CasaCuba will stand as a beacon, a testament to the resilience and richness of Cuban culture, inviting all to join in celebrating and preserving this invaluable legacy. Join the Hejl Foundation in creating what will be the global epicenter for celebrating the contributions of the Cuban people for generations to come.
